However, it wasn’t that easy. There were lots of challenges to earn their puzzle pieces to begin with pic.twitter.com/3MN3kBNors

Phonics & Early Reading

At Cherry Fields, we use the Read Write Inc (RWI) programme to get children off to a flying start with their literacy. RWI is a method of learning focused on letter sounds and phonics, and we use it to aid children in their reading and writing.

Reading opens the door to learning. A child who reads a lot will become a good reader. A good reader will be able to read more challenging material. A child who reads challenging material is a child who will learn. The more a child learns, the more he or she will want to find out.

Using RWI, the children learn to read effortlessly so that they can put all their energy into comprehending what they read. It also allows them to spell effortlessly so that they can put all their energy into composing what they write.

When using RWI to read the children will:

  • learn 44 sounds and the corresponding letter/letter groups using simple picture prompts
  • learn to read words using Fred Talk
  • read lively stories featuring words they have learned to sound out
  • show that they comprehend the stories by answering questions.

When using RWI to write the children will:

  • learn to write the letters/letter groups which represent 44 sounds.
  • learn to write words by saying the sounds in Fred Talk
  • write simple sentences

Below is further information on how how ReadWrite Inc develops your child's early reading skills and as well as how you can support your child at home:

Please also see the information below on reading across the school:

Read Write Inc

  • We use Read Write Inc as our core approach to teaching early reading skills.  This is a systematic phonic scheme.

  • Children have daily Read Write Inc lessons from the Summer Term in Nursery, right through to Year 2, Term 3.  Read Write Inc is a very structured scheme and teachers follow this.  You may have seen examples of how we teach phonics through the links that we send home.

  • The Read Write Inc scheme supports our children in Year 1 to confidently access the Phonics Screening Check.  More importantly, it ensures that by the end of the Spring term in Year 2 most children are confident and fluent readers.  Some children may need additional support and may take longer to progress through the scheme.  Class teachers will discuss this with you at parent's meetings if your child needs additional support with reading.

  • The Read Write Inc scheme links directly to the phonics reading book that your children will bring home.

Early Years

  • In Nursery & Reception, we also develop children’s love of reading and early language acquisition through the use of Read Write Inc.’s ‘Talk through Stories’ and other high-quality texts. Children will be read to, or explore a story, daily during class reading time.

  • In our Nursery and Reception classrooms, we celebrate books and foster a love of reading through our book areas. We ensure that stories are reflected in our environment.

KS1

Year 1 Specific

  • Reading in Year 1 is taught through Read Write Inc phonics.  A daily 30-minute lesson is delivered from 9:00 –9:30. The class is split into two or three groups depending on pupils’ assessments.

  • In addition to our high-quality phonics scheme, we have a structured programme of texts that we read and share.  This is based upon a programme called CUSP reading.  Here are some of the texts we will explore in Year 1:

Year 2 Specific

  • Autumn term reading and Spring Term 1 is delivered using Read Write Inc phonics scheme.  Children continue to work on the phonics scheme with a focus on fluency, moving towards confident fluent readers at grey books.

  • After February half term, the whole class moves to the Read Write Inc comprehension scheme.  This forms the 30-minute reading session daily.  In these lessons, pupils explore texts and learn how to use reading skills such as retrieval and inference.  In lessons, we learn how to answer questions about a text, develop our understanding of language by broadening our vocabulary and also continue to develop our fluency.

  • In addition, we have a structured programme of texts that we read and share.  This is based upon a programme called CUSP reading.  Here are some of the texts we will explore in Year 2:

KS2

  • In KS2, Years 3 and 4, we follow the CUSP reading programme to support our daily reading lesson. This is a structured programme that supports children to develop their fluency and reading skills, through exploring high quality texts.

  • Each unit is based upon a high-quality core text, with additional extracts that link to the text.

  • We work to develop children’s independence in their retrieval skills so that they are able to quickly skim and scan for key information to answer questions.  In addition, children learn how to be detectives, finding evidence from the text to answer inference questions for example.  In KS2 we encourage children to use a highlighter to help them identify the evidence that supports their answers.

  • The high-quality texts are chosen to ensure children have the opportunity to explore a range of authors and themes within the texts.

Resource Base

  • In the resource base each child has daily 1:1 phonics at a level to meet and cater for their needs. For some children this is also supported and reinforced through additional 1:1 intervention.  Children are taught through our whole school phonics scheme of Read, Write, Inc at a suitable level and pace to best support their progress.

  • Our literacy is taught using carefully selected and appropriate stories to promote a love of books and reading as well as to develop vocabulary and are pitched at an appropriate accessible level for all learners.

  • Literacy learning uses symbols alongside words to support the children to compose their sentences and read them back, supporting reading skills.

  • Children access the library in school weekly and these books are taken home to share with families. The children look at and share their story with an adult daily in school.

  • There is a small range of books available in the resource base daily for children to access. These books are carefully selected each week to support the topic of learning and children's interests. Staff also notice the types of books individual children are more engaged with to ensure these are available. Books and stories are used daily to support children's regulation. The children recognise this as a valuable tool for one another and will often offer a peer a book if they notice they are dysregulated.

  • At times we also recognise that digital stories are supportive to the children within the resource base.

Whole School Reading Initiatives

  • Daily reading for homework is promoted across the school

  • Paired reading across classes

  • Termly reading raffle – linked to reading at home

  • World book day celebrations

  • Star of the Week – Star Reader Certificate
